So what do masons do?

Not to be confused with the secret, exclusive society seen in the Davinci Code, masons are specialized labourers who utilize bricks, concrete blocks and natural stone to create walls (including retaining wall construction), accent posts, walkways and pathways, steps, pool decks and anywhere upon which you can lay or stack these blocks, bricks or stones.

What services do we provide?

Here are a few:

Brick and stone work: these materials can be used to create walkways, pathways, driveways, patios, porches, upright structures and more.  This category can also include stone and brick repairs.

Chimneys and fireplaces: although we can build these structures, we’re often called for fireplace and chimney repairs.  Whether you’re looking and displaced bricks or stones, cracks or spalling, we perform chimney and fireplace repairs with care, as this is vital for safety, with aesthetics as a bonus.

Walkways and steps: walkways are installed with precision to ensure an even look, while steps are securely applied to an underlying foundation for stability.

Parging: this is cement-type coating added to the base of a wall, usually, but not always, a basement foundation wall for a pleasing look and some resistance to elements like snow and rain.

Waterproofing: parging only offers some resistance to water, but waterproofing is needed to ensure no water leakage which would leave the foundation susceptible to damage and structural instability.  We have a specialized technique in ensuring those damaging events don’t happen.

The masonry services above are a snapshot of what we do, but there are others.  If you need any service that involves bricks, blocks and stones, it’s most likely we’ve done and we can provide that service for you.  If in doubt, just give us a call and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you have about our services.  We can also give an estimate of the project details, length of project and subsequent maintenance schedule and details.

What kind of problems does a mason typically run into when they do masonry restoration services?

There are quite a few, actually, and they may include:

  • Cracks: cracks in the brick or stone can compromise structural integrity of the building or structure, not to mention is an eye-sore.  You can have an otherwise beautiful structure or building, but the eyes will be automatically drawn to imperfections such as cracks, stains and spalling.

  • Staining: bricks can show their age when their colour starts to match poorly with adjoining bricks, and is often caused by age, exposure to elements (think snow and rain) and water penetration, which leads us to the next point…

  • Water penetration: moisture seeping through the bricks or stones is the source of many other issues including the aforementioned cracks and staining.  Care must be taken to prevent this potential damaging problem through waterproofing and other masonry techniques.  However, if the damage has already been done, Richmond Hill Masonry can assess to see if a simple refacing or a complete brick restoration is needed.

  • Faulty mortar joints: this can be caused by bond failure between bricks or stones, and can ultimately lead to bulges, hollowed patches or peeling.

  • Displacement: this can be caused by environmental elements but also by poor workmanship.  If the lateral anchors were improperly installed, you’re more likely to see displacement or shifting or bricks and stones sooner than anticipated.

  • Spalling: this is the falling of bricks and stones from building walls and chimneys and can pose a safety hazard for those below.  It can be caused by age and exacerbated by poor initial workmanship.  Spalling should be immediately addressed to prevent any potential injuries.

Frequently asked questions:
Can masonry work be done in the winter?
There are some masonry jobs that are best suited for warmer weather, but some such as chimney repairs should not wait.  This is to prevent water seeping into the chimney as the freeze-thaw cycle can cause detrimental damage to the structure, causing water seepage and subsequent water damage.
Why is masonry important to the construction of a structure?
Masonry units (typically brick, stone or concrete) offer a myriad of benefits beyond the obvious strengthening of the structural integrity.  In a nutshell, it provides: fire resistance, termite resistance, sound reduction, improved insulation and as a bonus, a beautiful aesthetic.
What's masonry veneer?
As the name implies, masonry veneer is a surface addition to an existing structure.  Its main purpose is aesthetic appeal as opposed to providing structural support.  Masonry veneers can be used in instances where there is no compromise to the existing structure, but is added to change or enhance the look, such as in a fireplace surround.  It is not intended to replace a cracking or damaged brick or stone structure.
